We were so honored and proud to serve as the Olympic Flag Bearers, representing diverse and invaluable aspects of human endeavor. Here is a short list of our thoughts as the Olympic Games conclude.
Tadatoshi Akiba---It was one of the most exciting and momentous occasions that drew the attention of so many people around the world to the existential threats nuclear weapons thrust upon us humanity. I am determined to accelerate the activities to abolish nuclear weapons by 2045 with new friends and fresh energy.
Filippo Grandi — I was proud to bring to a global event, seen by millions, the voice of millions of refugees and other people impacted and displaced by war, violence, persecution and discrimination, who must not be forgotten.
Maryam Bukar Hassan - At Olympic flag bearing moment, I understood quickly that this was not simply ceremony. A flag is never just fabric. It carries history, memory, aspiration, conflict, and reconciliation sometimes all at once. To carry one publicly is to carry humanity’s ongoing conversation about how we live together with dignity.
Yet what stayed with me most was not the stadium, the spectacle, or even the symbolism of the flag itself. It was the people beside me.
Nicolò Govoni - The greatest honour wasn’t carrying the flag, but doing so alongside the other Flagbearers - each redefining peace through lived experience. In an era of societal division, muddled conflict and increasing supranational control, authentic peace rejects blanket statements. Together, we stand for the freedom to represent peace against conformity and oppression.
